Arsenal To Fight Liverpool For Per Mertesacker Signature - Transfer Latest (Image via Wikipedia)
Arsene Wenger faces competition from Liverpool in the race to buy Per Mertesacker.
The Arsenal boss has been a fan of the German defender for a few seasons now and even tried to bring him to the Emirates Stadium last Summer.
It is now being reported that he has just made another £8 Million bid for the player, but Roy Hodgson is also in talks with Werder Bremen officials, who would like to receive £10 Million for their star.
This could spark a bidding war, with both Arsenal and Liverpool in need of reinforcements at the back.
Wenger is aware that Thomas Vermaelen will take a while to come back from a long-term lay-off and he would like to have Mertersacker in the squad to face Barcelona in February.
Meanwhile at Anfield Jamie Carragher is out for three months with a dislocated shoulder and Daniel Agger needs a top class partner in defense.
